A Eucharistic Holy Hour is a Catholic devotional tradition of spending one continuous hour in prayer in the presence of Jesus Christ, truly present in the Blessed Sacrament (exposed in a monstrance or in the tabernacle). It serves as a time for adoration, meditation, reparation for sins, and spiritual reflection, often inspired by Christ’s request to pray in Gethsemane.
To adore Jesus in the Eucharist, express love, and offer reparation for sins. The devotion is rooted in 17th-century apparitions to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, encouraging an hour of prayer on Thursdays to share in Christ’s agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. While there is no single formula, traditional activities include silent meditation, reading Scripture, praying the Rosary, or reciting the “Jesus Prayer”. It is often broken into four 15-minute segments:
- Adoration (praise),
- Contrition (forgiveness),
- Thanksgiving, and
- Supplication (petition)
but can be spent in silent contemplation.
Approach the Blessed Sacrament with faith and reverence, often by genuflecting.
Share your thoughts, joys, and struggles with the Lord, using the silence to listen.
Meditate on a passage from the Bible to guide your thoughts. If you are new to this, start with shorter durations, or use spiritual reading to help focus your mind.
